Busy Morning

What a morning, I feel like I accomplished alot, and yet there is still so much to do. We had our first irrigation for the season this morning. We needed it so badly, but the first time is a big job. They didn't tell us until last night, so that left me to get it all ready this morning. So, here I go, in shorts and irrigation boots - quite a sight to see I'm sure - out to get ready for the water. We have to put up a little barracade in the front to keep the water off the front porch - otherwise it leaks under the door and into the house, which is not fun to clean up. Got that done, then to throw some dirt in front of the shed door for the same reason. Then had to clean up some piles of weeds and stuff - I had been planting flowers yesterday and cleaning out flower beds, so I had piles of weeds that needed to be cleaned up so that they wouldn't be washed all over the yard. Next was the chicken coop - during the winter the dirt we had up around the coop to keep the water out had worn down from the chickens digging on the edges of the coop. So, I had to dig a wheelbarrow full of dirt to fill in around the coop. Got that done just in time for the water to come - and along with it tons of leaves and stuff from the ditch that hadn't been running this winter. So, I had to rake and keep the waterways clear so that the water would go where I needed it. In the middle of all of this I was supervising the girls getting ready for school, and had to stop and take them to school. Finally go it all done, and the yard is nice and watered with some nice piles of leaves for the kids to clean up tomorrow. After that I decided to finish my garden, I was already a mess and it's supposed to rain tomorrow so I figured I had better get it done before it becomes a muddy mess. I got 20 tomatoe plants and 10 bell peppers planted, picked a big bowl full of snap peas, and pulled a ton of weeds from the edge of the garden. The chickens like the weeds since they have to kept in a large run so the dogs won't get them. So, I took a armful of weeds to throw in with them and one little red hen decided to sneak out. I grabbed at her before the dogs could get her, but only got her tail - I ended up pulling out her tail feathers, I still feel bad about that. She flew/ran over to the muddy area where the water comes into the back yard. The dogs backed off after I yelled at them, so I had to chase her into the mud - threw off my flip-flops and walked through very sticky mud, finally got her to calm down and let me pick her up, by this time she was all muddy, too. So, now I'm covered in mud. I finished my garden, watered everything that the irrigation doesn't reach and came in for a shower. I feel like I did so much, yet there is so much to do in the yard still - and everything I didn't get done in here. I would love to have a week to just work in the yard and not have to worry about stopping and getting ready to go somewhere or take care of something else. But I don't, so I just have to take a little at a time. That is where I am the happiest though - in the middle of my garden or planting flowers, taking care of the animals, something outside in my yard - that makes me happy.

I wish I could see this "irrigation" you speak of. It sounds like a controlled flood, which sounds insane to me. Maybe because I live somewhere where we wait 6 months for it to stop raining long enough to go out and weed the yard.. Good luck with the garden. I got a couple tomatoes and a few green chile plants to put in, after it stops raining on me.. Love ya!

Alex's Human - I'll have to try and get some pictures next time we irrigate - it is a controlled flood. I don't ever have to water my yard, though - as long as I get the irrigation every 2 weeks.
